4-21-11: How to Take a Vacation Without Adding the Stress of Bed Bugs
State pest association provides tips for enjoying a summer vacation without bringing home itchy guests
Raleigh, N.C.–With vacation season right around the corner, the North Carolina Pest Management Association (NCPMA) today urged North Carolinians to take steps to prevent bringing bed bugs back as souvenirs.
A recent study released by the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) stated that 12 percent of respondents had altered or canceled their travel plans due to fear of bed bugs. In addition, 25 percent had inspected hotel rooms for signs of the pests, 27 percent had washed their clothes upon returning from the trip and 17 percent inspected or vacuumed their suitcases after returning from a trip.
“Being vigilant about inspecting for bed bugs can prevent people from introducing the pests into their own homes, but people should still enjoy their vacations and take the opportunity to relax,” said Burns Blackwell of Terminix in Greensboro and board member of the NCPMA. “There are some simple steps that everyone can take that will prevent bed bugs from hitching a ride home.”
According to the NPMA, bed bug infestations have risen 71 percent since 2001 and bed bugs can be found in all 50 states.
Bed bugs hide in small cracks and crevices close to a human environment. They are often found behind baseboards, wallpaper, upholstery and in furniture crevices.
“It’s important for people to know that bed bugs do not pose any health risks, but can be an itchy nuisance,” said Lee Smith, entomologist and board member of the NCPMA. “If a homeowner does suspect that bed bugs are in their homes, we recommend that they call a pest professional immediately and not try to self-treat the problem. It is easier and less costly to treat the problem in its early stages.”
Bed bugs can be found anywhere regardless of cleanliness or sanitary conditions. They have been found in properties of all levels of income.
Although treating bed bugs requires a professional pest management company, there are several steps to help prevent bringing bed bugs into a home. These steps are:
- Vacuum suitcases after returning from a vacation and wash all clothing from the suitcases in hot water.
- Before sleeping in a hotel or rental property bed, check the mattress, bed sheets, and headboard for tell-tale blood spots or signs of bed bugs.
- If signs of bed bugs are spotted, alert the hotel or rental property staff. Each hotel or rental property should have a Bed Bug Management Plan in plane to assist you as the problem is addressed.
- Consider bringing a large plastic trash bag in which to store your suitcase during hotel stays.
- Carry a small flashlight to assist you with quick visual inspections.
- Bed bugs are elusive creatures, so it is imperative to seek professional pest control to address an infestation. Trying to treat a problem without a professional can make the problem worse and more costly.
