11-8-10: State Association Provides Tips for Keeping Homes Free of Winter Pests

Association provides recommendations for safely treating pest problems and preventing unwanted visitors

Raleigh, N.C. – The recent cold snap has reminded us that winter is right around the corner, and it brings about the possibility of pests entering homes in search of warmer winter homes.  The North Carolina Pest Management Association (NCPMA) today urged homeowners to use this warm weather to take precautionary steps to prevent these pests from entering their homes.

“Many pests are already starting to move for warmer locations for the colder months.  Many pests try to move to warmer places when it gets colder, and heated homes are very inviting places for them to spend the colder months,” said entomologist and NCPMA Board Member Lee Smith.  “Now is an excellent time for homeowners to begin preparing their homes to prevent any unwanted pest visitors.”

During winter months, pests such as spiders, cockroaches and rodents tend to travel to warmer locations to avoid the cold weather.  Other insects including many species of flies and wasps seek suitable locations to spend these months over-wintering.  Homes and buildings provide a warm place for these pests to spend these colder months but can prove problematic for homeowners.

“A professional pest management company can help homeowners develop a plan of action for properly preventing and treating any infestations over winter months,” Smith said.

The NCPMA offers the following tips to homeowners as they begin winterizing their homes against pests:

  • Read and follow instructions carefully. Many over-the-counter products can be effective as a short-term solution, but, as with any other chemical product, should be used cautiously.  Read all instructions before using the product and follow the instructions carefully.  If you have questions about a product, call the manufacturer of that product.
  • Clean your house. Insects and pests are usually looking for a warm place where they can find food.  Keep your floors and countertops free of clutter and food to avoid attracting pests indoors.
  • Keep garages, attics and basements clean and clutter free…and check your stored holiday decorations for any pests before you bring them down from the attic or garage.
  • Consult a professional. Get your home inspected regularly by a qualified, licensed pest professional.  Your pest professional can recommend steps you can take to make sure your home stays pest-free.  Visit www.ncpestmanagement.org to find a pest professional in your area.
